AIGA Nebraska's Love/Hate Valentine Card Contest

Love/Hate

V-Day is a upon us. There's no better way to celebrate than to send that special someone a card to show how much you care. Or how much you don't.

Put Cupid to shame and design your own card for that special (or not-so-special) person in your life.

You can be as warm and fuzzy as a stuffed teddy bear or as sinful as a box of chocolates. Just be creative and be clever (that means limiting the quantity of V.D. puns), and enter the AIGA Love/Hate Valentine Contest to show us the best (or worst) card you've got!

On February 5th, we hosted a special Valentine-themed exhibit showcasing the best and all the rest. Click here to see photos of the AIGA board setting up the show and here to see photos from the show opening / closing night.

Winning cards are printed and ready to mail, and the judge's pick received a very special Valentine's prize!

*Recipient had to be present at the Febuary 5th exhibition to win the judge's pick prize.

›› Judge Andy Cruz's Pick: "Love Heals All Wounds" by Bennett Holzworth
What Andy said: "Gotta go with this one as my judges pick. A strong and simple design option for that someone who’s trying to patch things up on valentine’s day."

›› Judge Dmitri Siegel's Pick: "Forever" by Heather Knudson
What Dmitri said: "I really appreciated the restraint both in both the design and the copy on this one. Obviously I responded to the photo and the designer did not get in the way of what was working. The image presents a very specific and genuine romantic moment with a touch of irony that keeps it form being corny. I love my wife's style and being close to her makes me feel suave and alive even when I'm just some dork on a moped. It's the specificity of that sentiment that I appreciate and that makes this transcend the hollowness of most Valentine's Day platitudes."

›› Judge Kate Bingaman's Pick: "Forever" by Heather Knudson
What Kate said: "Ack! This was so hard! I changed my mind a few times, but I ultimately picked the image that stayed with me over the few days that I was deliberating the entries. It was the image that I kept coming back to and the image that ultimately put a smile on my face and made my stomach warm. The golden image of the couple of the bike is the valentine that I would most like to show up in my mailbox. Vroom! Vroom!"

›› Judge Jessica Hische's Pick: "Enjoy your generic, consumer-driven holiday—you sycophant." by Bruce Hartford
What Jessica said: "It is visually striking in its simplicity, but it is really the writing and concept that makes it a strong piece. Helvetica is not a warm typeface, it is a utilitarian typeface. Setting the word HEART in Helvetica really made it feel more referential to anatomy than to feelings of love and affection, which works well with the message."

Kate Bingaman-Burt Kate Bingaman-Burt

Kate Bingaman-Burt was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1977. She founded Obsessive Consumption in 2002 and has documented her personal consumption in many different mediums. Her first book, Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy Today?, will be published by Princeton Architectural Press in March 2010.

Bingaman-Burt is active in the indie craft and craftivism movements. She provided all of the illustrations for the book Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design, as well as the promotional materials for the documentary of the same name. She lives in Portland, Oregon where, along with being an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University, she also makes piles of work about consumerism (zines! pillows! dresses! drawings! paper chains! photos!). She happily draws for other good people too (IDEO, Madewell, ReadyMade Magazine, The New York Times, Wieden + Kennedy). Kate also conducts zine workshops and spreads the craftivism word. Her first international zine workshop will occur at the American University in Cairo, Egypt in 2010.

Andy CruzAndy Cruz

Born the son of a hot rodder, Andy spent his early years skating the mean streets of Elsmere, Delaware, and hassling the French Paper samples department for Charles Anderson posters. After graduating from Delcastle Vocational and Technical High School with "shop" certification in Commercial Art, he opted to skip art school and started working as a full-time designer at a local firm. Apart from his obvious artistic talents, Andy had a knack for subtle persuasion that he would later use to talk Rich into quitting a cushy, well-paying marketing job to start Brand Design Co. As the art director and creative nerve center of House Industries, Andy uses his calm, quiet demeanor to cajole frustrated House artists/designers into making something perfect by redoing it "one more time." If he's not collecting furniture, toys or other junk that will somehow turn into a House Industries product, he's spending time with his ladies: wife Stephanie and daughters, Ava and Mia.
